Family members of children with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) often face social, emotional, and behavioral challenges in the home. Difficulty communicating with family members, forming relationships with friends, and responding appropriately to others can cause significant challenges in the home (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders; DSM-IV-TR, 2000). Many children with ASDs require specialized supports to experience success in developing social interaction and communication skills. Visual supports are an inexpensive and simple intervention to help children with autism gain the social skills they will require in life. This article offers families suggestions for addressing children's social skill needs using visual supports. First, it will review the empirical research on the importance of social skills in the context of socio-emotional development. Second, it will examine the evidence base for using visual supports to enhance social skill development. Third, it will offer examples of visual supports that can be easily implemented in the home setting. (Contains 1 figure.)
