Education in Germany. Bulletin, 1938, No. 15
Lindegren, Alina M.
Office of Education, United States Department of the Interior
While educational developments in Germany have always been of interest to the people of this country, educators and laymen in the United States have shown particular interest since 1933 because of the relationship which the school system there has had to the central government and its evolving political, economic, racial, and social doctrines. The purpose here is to present as nearly as possible the main features of education as it is in Germany in these early years of the present form of government, and to note the somewhat rapid changes that are being made in it. The general theme of the bulletin is the organization of instruction, the subjects that are taught on each level, the time allotted to them, the sequences, and the orderly processes whereby men and women acquire the training for and are licensed to practice the professions of law, medicine, theology, teaching, engineering music, and art. The study is arranged in two parts not specifically designated as such. The first part deals with elementary and secondary education, the middle schools, and the training of teachers for these three levels of instruction. The second part begins with Chapter 5, and relates to instruction given in the universities, technical high schools, and special schools on higher education levels. An appendix presents a statistical summary of the most important data on the main types of educational institutions described in this bulletin. A bibliography is also included. (Contains 54 footnotes and 35 tables.) [Best copy available has been provided.]
