"Musical Mother Tongue" and Creativity in Preschool Children's Melody Improvisations.
Kalmar, Magda; Balasko, Gitta
Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music Education, n91 p77-86 Spr 1987
Investigated the relationship between children's melodic improvisations and three types of music instruction provided over a two-and-a-half year period. The children were asked to produce a melody to go with previously memorized tuneless rhymes. Results showed significant differences among the groups, thus supporting the assumption of a "musical mother tongue." (RKM)
