Pinker, Aron – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 1981
Sixty-two students in an elementary education program for mathematics training as elementary teachers responded to a questionnaire that exhibited incorrect uses of the concept "set." The study revealed that the majority surveyed could not detect incorrect uses of the concept. (SK)

Hadar, N.; Hadass, R. – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 1981
A guided discovery lesson on the Law of Sines was analyzed for teaching moves. After breaking down the lessons in a transcription, the frequency of certain moves was listed and then categorized. This report is designed to serve as a guide to others who wish to make similar studies. (MP)

Giles, Eunice J.; Gilbert, John K. – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 1981
Prompts used by mathematics teachers are categorized into the following three major orientations: 1) motivation; 2) process; and 3) product. The structure of each type of prompt is broken into sub-categories and discussed with examples. This analysis is viewed as the first step towards teacher training for prompting skills. (MP)

Byers, Victor – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 1980
This paper discusses some of the factors which have to be considered in constructing an adequate description of the understanding of mathematics. It examines three models of understanding which have appeared during the last three years. (Author/MK)

Gupta, I. D. – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 1980
Mathematics is often referred to as a language. This paper attempts to explore the implied meanings of such statements and to outline a rationale for utilizing the language-structure of mathematics in mathematics instruction. (Author/MK)

Cohen, Martin P.; Walsh, Margaret, Sr. – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 1980
This study tested the relative efficacy of two modes of instruction, individual and traditional, for promoting learning and retention of selected geometrical concepts. The results of the study did not indicate a significant effect on learning or retention due to the mode of instruction. (Author/MK)

Walkden, F.; Scott, M. R. – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 1980
Concern about certain of the difficulties encountered by undergraduate students in learning mathematics is discussed. Three attitudes of present-day undergraduates which contribute significantly to the difficulties encountered by students are examined. (Author/MK)

Hamadanizadeh, Javad – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 1980
The systems approach to teaching is briefly discussed and then applied to teaching undergraduate calculus. The implementation procedure, specifications of the learning units, program of study and experimentation, and the various types of expenses are also outlined. (Author/MK)

Gonzalez-Leon, Eduardo – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 1980
This paper describes a scheme of diagnosis and remediation in mathematics for undergraduates consisting of a multiple choice preknowledge test and certain books and programed materials. Certain knowledge gaps and their causes are identified and the effectiveness of the remedial materials and procedures are evaluated. (Author/MK)

Gravina, Robert M. – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 1980
This paper investigates similarities and differences between the computer and the human brain in terms of thought processes and develops the theory that the computer can learn, is intelligent and does satisfy educational learning requirements. (Author/MK)

Steiner, Hans-Georg – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 1980
The concept of school curriculum in science and mathematics is discussed and related to the structures of the disciplines and theory developments. Recent epistemological studies on theory dynamics (Kuhn, Sneed) are put into context with the understanding of learning processes. (Author/MK)

Fearnley-Sander, Desmond – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 1980
A calculator solution of a simple computational problem is discussed with emphasis on its ramifications for the understanding of some fundamental theorems of pure mathematics and techniques of computing. (Author/MK)

Davies, H. B. – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 1980
Attention is drawn to an ancient Greek method for finding the least common multiple (LCM) of two numbers. A link is established between this method and a well-known method of obtaining the highest common factor (HCF) numbers. This leads to consideration of some relationships between HCF and LCM. Clark, B. E.; Shannon, A. G. – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 1980
This paper describes an approach to the problem of teaching first-year tertiary level mathematics students who have widely varying levels of achievement and ability in mathematics. The evaluation of some aspects of the proposed solution to the problem is based on a semantic differential and a Likert-type questionnaire. (Author/MK)
