Student personality characteristics identified by the Omnibus Personality Inventory suggest that elected studies students are intellectual liberals, along with other nontraditional degree students, those who withdraw voluntarily, and upperclass students. The Field Studies Program is an undergraduate, interdisciplinary experience in field-related education at the University of California - Berkeley begun in 1971. A nontraditional, off-campus, master's degree from the University of Utah was shown to "pay off" for its graduates. A research project matching the graduates with nonattendees indicated significant gains regarding salary, promotability, and perceptions of self and job. Helping students learn how to learn should be a major teaching objective and a major teaching skill in nontraditional education. Evaluation processes, both in planning and implementation, should be consistent with knowledge, values, and goals of nontraditional education, and their basis should be a theory of adult learning.
