Matched pairs of tutors and adult students in a volunteer tutoring program were surveyed. Successful students consistently rated tutors first as friends, second helpers, and third teachers. They made the greatest overall progress and were most committed to the program. (SK)

A program in which Australian advisors provided technical assistance in Thailand demonstrated that traditional Western wisdom about the purposes of education and job training may conflict with the values of the recipient culture. Fifty-six older adults in Tasmania were interviewed about technology related to medical treatment, transportation, household appliances, banking, and computers. They were far less informed about computers; 34% overall and more than 50% of those over 60 were interested in learning more. (SK)
