Kluger, Richard – Journal of Blacks in Higher Education, 1994
Profiles Charles Hamilton Houston, onetime head of Howard University, counsel to the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, and legal scholar instrumental in framing the strategy that produced the Brown v. Board of Education decision. Houston also argued a number of other important civil rights cases. (SLD)

Meilman, Philip W.; And Others – Journal of Blacks in Higher Education, 1994
According to a study of 40,192 college students, the average weekly alcohol consumption among black students is only one-third that of white students, and black collegians report binge drinking at rates less than half those of white students. Hypotheses are advanced for these differences. (SLD)

In 1992, only four blacks in the entire country earned a Ph.D. in mathematics. In the 25 highest-ranked universities, there are only 5 black mathematics professors. Traditional academic beliefs about the inability of blacks to do abstract thinking appear partly responsible. (SLD)

Once black students matriculate at a predominantly white college, they are often left to fend for themselves. Some schools, however, have launched retention programs that are effective. A tentative effort is made to use citation analysis to evaluate productivity of science departments at black universities and to compare them with other black universities and white universities. Caution is urged in interpreting citation analysis results, but they do seem to indicate a widening gap between white schools and black schools. (SLD)
