Responses from 157 of 592 architects who used a self-assessment instrument showed that (1) the instrument helped identify professional learning needs; (2) consensus is lacking regarding professional knowledge; (3) instruments raise legal issues for individuals and organizations; and (4) self-assessment is perceived as an educational activity in itself.
