Investigated the effect of using tape-recorded aural models for home practice on selected sight-reading and performance skills of sixth-grade clarinet students. Examined and compared self-reported reasons for pop music preferences of 397 students in grades five, seven, nine, eleven, and college. Results revealed that characteristics such as melody, mood, rhythm, and lyrics were the most important reasons for selection. Differences in response by age and background characteristics were noted. Undergraduate music majors and nonmajors rated 17 musical instruments and two related musical occupations on a masculine/feminine scale.
