A national census of children in residential care in New South Wales and Victoria (Australia) was conducted in 1983 and repeated in 1988. Results are analyzed in terms of number of children, number of units, children's age and school attendance, reasons for residential care, size and organization of residences, administration of residences, and length of stay.
