Teacher Education for the Improvement of School Health Programs: A Summary Report of Two Demonstration Workshops--Suggested Standards for the Professional Health Education of Teachers. Bulletin, 1948, No. 16
Stafford, Frank S.; Kilander, H. F.
Office of Education, Federal Security Agency
Today, educators, parents, and the public in general are showing an increased interest in the health of children and youth. The report published in this bulletin represents a summary of the joint thinking of the personnel of two demonstration workshops in health education sponsored by the Office of Education with the financial assistance of the National Tuberculosis Association. One was held at Ball State Teachers College, Muncie, Indiana, in 1946; the other at Utah State Agricultural College, Logan, in 1947. The conclusions and recommendations of the participants are summarized here to aid in the betterment of the school health education program through "improved teacher education." Special consideration is given to the possible contributions that can be made to the development of a health consciousness in the prospective teacher through providing an opportunity to live on a campus where adequate health services and a healthful college environment exist. Areas of classroom learning are discussed, but specific recommendations concerning courses and credit requirements are not given, since State and institutional requirements differ to a considerable degree. It is left to the individual States and institutions to set up their courses and requirements. No attempt was made to "spell out" the content for specific courses. It is recommended that the administrators of teachers colleges examine their institutional responsibilities and opportunities, as outlined in the first two chapters. The remaining chapters should be more helpful especially to the individuals who may be assigned the detailed job of implementing such a program. (Contains 4 footnotes.)
