Children with disabilities often experience negative feedback more so than their classmates. Experts in the field list improved self-esteem as treatment for the child's academic, social and behavioral problems. However, recent studies have shown that children with disabilities do not necessarily have poor self images, and may have a high self-esteem as a coping method from being seen as different. This paper examines the academic and social advantages and disadvantages of inflated and underestimated self-concept on children with disabilities.
