Pedagogic Activities of Music Instructors at Postsecondary Institutions in Florida
Barros, Maria Das Dores; Piotrowski, Chris; Hernandez, Alberto
Education, v127 n3 p435-439 Spr 2007
Most journals and compendiums (e.g., Colwell, 1992) in the area of music education focus on the preparation of teachers for instruction at the elementary through secondary level. There is but sparse research on college or university level instruction regarding departments of music. To address this void in the literature, the current study presents survey data, based on 50 postsecondary music instructors in Florida, on academic and applied areas of interest in the field of music. The results indicated that college-level music instructors are engaged in a vast spectrum of music-related activities in the areas of musical performance, musicology, theory, conducting, and private studio. Moreover, research interests of faculty reflect these comprehensive topical areas, including emphasis on international influences on contemporary music. Suggestions for future research were noted.
