Hands-On Teaching in a Campus Museum: Linking Theory and Practice
Stone, Denise L.
Art Education, v66 n3 p16-21 May 2013
Aspiring art teachers must acquire theoretical and practical knowledge spanning a number of subject areas such as studio, pedagogy, children's development, classroom management, and assessment tools as well as instructional skills. Chief among them are curriculum development, advocacy, and leadership skills. Preparing prospective art teachers is challenging, as many of the aforementioned knowledge and skills cannot be taught in college classrooms. This article describes campus art museums and their potential role in preparing prospective art teachers. Unlike campus classrooms, university museums feature pristine galleries as educational sites where open spaces quietly highlight art. Visitors wander unexpectedly through these rooms. Campus museums are staffed by administrators trained in art history and education. Public programs and school tours punctuate gallery activities. Teaching in this venue poses unexpected challenges to most, including art education majors, whose career choice requires flexibility, advocacy skills, and swift responsiveness in an environment outside their comfort zone. Campus museums also offer teacher educators one way to place students in viable teaching settings.
