Understanding Islam in the U.S. Classroom: A Guide for Elementary School Teachers

This article provides strategies that are recommended to elementary school teachers to help students in the U.S. understand Islam and its followers. It discusses the importance of cultural and historical studies in making students aware of the value of Islam to its followers. Three strategies described herein are: the concept of similarities, the concept of diversity, and the historical contributions made by scholars from the Muslim world in various fields or disciplines. It is concluded that the issues and approaches described in this article will provide educators with a starting point toward building tolerance, understanding, and appreciation among and between people of non-Islamic faith and the followers of Islam.
