Influences of Language and Parental Involvement on the Development of Counting Skills: Comparisons of French- and English-Speaking Canadian Children.
Lefevre, Jo-Anne; Clarke, Tamara; Stringer, Alex P.
Early Child Development and Care, v172 n3 p283-300 Jun 2002
Examined performance of Canadian French- and English-speaking preschoolers on four number tasks. Found that French-speaking preschoolers performed more poorly on rote-counting and number-recognition than English-speaking preschoolers. Found no difference between groups on counting objects. Variability in counting and number recognition was predicted by knowledge of the counting string and parents' teaching about numbers and letters. (Author/KB)
