The landscape of higher education--the growing variety of higher education institutions, the cultural environment, the competitive ecosystem--is changing rapidly and disruptively. The higher education landscape is metaphorically crossed with fault lines, those fissures in the landscape creating potential areas of dramatic change, and is as "seismic" as it has been in decades. Focusing strictly on technology trends can obscure other environmental factors that are drivers for innovation in higher education. The authors identify ten fissures or fault lines in the landscape that are creating areas of potentially tectonic change: (1) The increasing differentiation of higher education; (2) The transformation of the general education curriculum; (3) The faculty faces of the future; (4) The surge in global faculty and student mobility; (5) The new "invisible college"; (6) The changing "traditional" student; (7) The mounting pressure to demonstrate the value added of a college degree; (8) The revaluation of "middle-skill" jobs; (9) Higher education as a private rather than a public good; and (10) Lifelong partnerships with students.
