Come into My Parlour Said the Spider to the Fly: Critical Reflections on Web-Based Education from a Student's Perspective
Bishop, Ann
Distance Education, v23 n2 p231-236 Oct 2002
At first glance, education provided over the Internet appears to be an improvement over that provided face to face. For busy adults juggling careers, courses and family obligations, learning via a Web site looks more convenient than attending classes face to face. Web-based courses are also reputed to educate better. Equity is another often-mentioned benefit. Web-based education also promises to be less expensive. Although the advantages of Web-based learning appear considerable, there are drawbacks, which are rarely discussed in the literature. The author discovered these when she took a Web-based course. In this article, the author discusses the drawbacks of Web-based education and offers advice for would-be Web-based educators.
