Development of Object Categories and Inclusion Relations: Preschoolers' Hypotheses about Word Meanings.
Callanan, Maureen A.
Developmental Psychology, v25 n2 p207-16 Mar 1989

In both studies, children interpreted labels for single objects at the basic level. The multiple-referent and inclusion strategies led children to interpret novel words at the superordinate level.
