Answering Young Children's Questions as a Determinant of Their Subsequent Question-Asking Behavior
Endsley, Richard C.; Clarey, Susan A.
Developmental Psychology, 11, 6, 863-864, Nov 75

The evidence also suggests that children use questions partially as a means of maintaining social contact and attention with a friendly adult after their information seeking efforts have been exhausted.
