Maternal Emotional Distress and Diminished Responsiveness: The Mediating Role of Parenting Efficacy and Parental Perspective Taking.
Gondoli, Dawn M.; Silverberg, Susan B.
Developmental Psychology, v33 n5 p861-68 Sep 1997
Used questionnaire and observations from 94 nonclinical mother-adolescent dyads to examine whether the inverse relationship between maternal emotional distress and responsiveness was mediated by mothers' parenting efficacy and parental perspective taking. Found that maternal emotional distress was associated with lower levels of mother- and adolescent-reported responsiveness. The association was mediated by mothers' perceptions of their parenting efficacy. (Author)
