Development of Scientific Reasoning Biases: Cognitive versus Ego-Protective Explanations.
Klaczynski, Paul A.; Narasimham, Gayathri
Developmental Psychology, v34 n1 p175-87 Jan 1998
Examined scientific reasoning and self-serving reasoning biases in 5th, 8th, and 11th graders. Found that scientific reasoning improved with age. Ratings of evidence quality and written justifications yielded mixed results regarding developmental trends in reasoning biases. Theoretical beliefs regarding religion and ego-protective motivations predicted reasoning biases. Accuracy motivations led to more complex justifications but failed to reduce reasoning biases.
