Young Children's Appreciation of the Mental Impact of Their Communicative Signals.
Shwe, Helen I.; Markman, Ellen M.
Developmental Psychology, v33 n4 p630-36 Jul 1997
Examined whether 30-month olds appreciate that their communicative signals are being understood by another. Separated listener comprehension from obtaining a material goal in communication. Children clarified their signal more when the experimenter misunderstood compared with when she understood. Regardless of achieving overt goal, children engaged in behaviors to ensure their communication had been understood. (Author/KB)
