Parenting Goals as Organizers of Responses to Parent-Child Disagreement.
Hastings, Paul D.; Grusec, Joan E.
Developmental Psychology, v34 n3 p465-79 May 1998
Three studies examined parents' goals during disagreements with young children. Found that women focused on relationship-centered goals more than men. Public situations increased concern for short-term parent-centered goals. Empathy predicted long-term child-centered and relationship-centered goals. Parent-centered goals were associated with power assertion, child-centered goals with reasoning, and relationship-centered goals with warm, negotiating, and cooperative parenting behavior.
