Comparison of the Development of Formal Thought in Adolescent Cohorts Aged 10 to 15 Years (1967-1996 and 1972-1993).
Flieller, Andre
Developmental Psychology, v35 n4 p1048-58 Jul 1999
Administered five Piagetian tests to 180 adolescents for comparison to similar samples from 1967 and 1972. Found that today's adolescents exhibited higher levels of cognitive development than did previous cohorts. Gain varied across tasks, being very large for combinatory thought but mixed for conservation. This acceleration of cognitive development can partially explain the rise in intelligence-test performance (Flynn effect). (Author/KB)
