Preschoolers' Understanding of Pretense and Presumption of Congruity between Action and Representation.
Aronson, James N.; Golomb, Claire
Developmental Psychology, v35 n6 p1414-25 Nov 1999
Four studies replicated Lillard's paradigm for studying preschoolers' understanding of pretense. Results indicated that decreasing contradictory information increased the incidence of correct judgments, suggesting an implicitly representational understanding of pretense. Findings challenge Lillard's conceptual analysis of pretense and suggest that methods adopted from the false-belief paradigm may be inappropriate for assessing preschoolers' understanding of pretense.
