Friendship and Social Competence in a Sample of Preschool Children Attending Head Start.
Vaughn, Brian E.; Azria, Muriel R.; Krzysik, Lisa; Caya, Lisa R.; Bost, Kelly K.; Kazural, Kerry L.
Developmental Psychology, v36 n3 p326-38 May 2000
Examined relation between friendship and social competence in Head Start preschoolers. Suggested that number of reciprocated friendships was associated with social competence. Found having nonreciprocated friendships was not a liability; there was a trend toward participating in reciprocated friendships from age 3 to 4; and number of reciprocated friendships correlated positively between Time 1 and Time 2 for girls.
