Body Image across the Life Span in Adult Women: The Role of Self-Objectification.
Tiggemann, Marika; Lynch, Jessica E.
Developmental Psychology, v37 n2 p243-53 Mar 2001
Investigated body image across life span in cross-section of women ages 20-84 years. Found that although body dissatisfaction remained stable, self-objectification, habitual body monitoring, appearance anxiety, and disordered eating all significantly decreased with age. Self- objectification mediated the relationship between age and disordered eating symptomology. Concluded that objectification theory helps clarify processes involved in age-related body image changes. (Author/KB)
