Peer Rejection as an Antecedent of Young Children's School Adjustment: An Examination of Mediating Processes.
Buhs, Eric S.; Ladd, Gary W.
Developmental Psychology, v37 n4 p550-60 Jul 2001
Used short-term longitudinal design to examine peer relations processes that may mediate relation between peer rejection and kindergartners' emotional and academic adjustment. Structural equation modeling results supported hypothesis that negative peer treatment and classroom participation partially mediated the relationship between rejection and adjustment. Rejected children experienced more negative peer treatment, decreased classroom participation, and loneliness than nonrejected peers. (Author/KB)
