Contextual Determinants of Mothers' Interventions in Young Children's Peer Interactions.
Colwell, Malinda J.; Mize, Jacquelyn; Pettit, Gregory S.; Laird, Robert D.
Developmental Psychology, v38 n4 p492-502 Jul 2002
This study investigated the role of context in mothers' interventions in their preschoolers' peer relationship problems. In response to a series of videotaped vignettes depicting common peer relationship problems, mothers suggested using more discussion in aggressive situations and more encouragement in initiating play situations. Mothers would use more power assertion when the child was the provocateur rather than the target of aggression. (Author/KB)
