Processes Linking Weight Status and Self-Concept among Girls from Ages 5 to 7 Years.
Davison, Kirsten Krahnstoever; Birch, Leann Lipps
Developmental Psychology, v38 n5 p735-48 Sep 2002
This longitudinal study examined peer teasing and parent criticism as mediators of the relationship between girls' weight status and self-concept. Findings indicated that at both ages 5 and 7, overweight girls reported lower self-concept. Peer weight-related teasing and parent criticism mediated relationship between weight status and self-concept at age 7 only. Duration and timing of parent criticism mediated association between weight status at 5 and perceived peer acceptance at 7. (Author/KB)
