Glyphs & Math: How to Collect, Interpret, and Analyze Data
Guzzetta, Torrie; Gilbert, Pat
Crystal Springs Books
A glyph--short for hieroglyphic--is a form of picture writing that conveys information. This book uses 10 glyphs to teach math concepts that are linked to the new NCTM Standards. There are four key parts to each glyph: (1) a legend (or survey questions); (2) directions for the teacher that tell students what to draw, color, or write based on answers to questions; (3) a glyph pattern; and (4) recording sheets. Using the sheets to collect, interpret, and analyze data, students solve problems using number sense, measurement, geometry, algebra, proportional reasoning, and probability. While gaining a better understanding of math concepts, children also will have fun learning mathematics.
