Ideologies of the Press in Regard to English Language Learners: A Case Study of Two Newspapers in Arizona

The media in general and newspapers in particular have a powerful influence on the formation of public attitudes in society. This study aimed at identifying and analyzing the ideologies of two newspapers in Arizona in regard to English language learners. Using discourse analysis, 90 texts published by "The Arizona Republic" and the "East Valley Tribune" between "2003" and "2012" were examined. Findings reveal that "The Arizona Republic" embraced assimilationist ideologies based on cultural and linguistic homogeneity (centered on the dominance of the English language) and a pro-immigration stance grounded on humanitarian and financial principles. The East Valley Tribune, on the other hand, supported an overarching anti-immigration ideology combined with principles of fiscal conservatism, English monolingualism, and cultural homogeneity.
