Globalization Viewed from the Periphery: The Dynamics of Teacher Identity in the Republic of Benin.
Welmond, Michel
Comparative Education Review, v46 n1 p37-65 Feb 2002
Archival research and interviews with teachers and key informants in Benin schools examined cultural schemata that define teacher identity as vessel and conveyer of special knowledge, civil servant, self-sacrificing parental surrogate, or efficient worker ensuring high test grades. Conflicts among these identities, between teachers and the state, and between global and local aspects of teacher identity are discussed. (SV)
