Cultural Influences on the Construction of Knowledge in Japanese Higher Education.
Kempner, Ken; Makino, Misao
Comparative Education, v29 n2 p185-99 1993

Scientific inquiry and professors' ability to produce knowledge, especially in the social sciences, are severely restricted by utilitarian conceptions of higher education. Nevertheless, some individual scientists linked to international knowledge networks pursue research not supported by the state. (SV)
