Institutional Practices and the Cultural Construction of Primary School Teaching in Botswana.
Arthur, Jo
Comparative Education, v34 n3 p313-26 Nov 1998
Draws on ethnographic observation to describe internal social structuring of Botswana primary schools; social hierarchy among teachers, staff, and students; and the cultural distance between schools and their communities. Argues that teacher training practices do not challenge trainees' previously internalized teaching concepts related to teacher authority, use of English, and the value of memorization. Contains 43 references. (Author/SV)
