Combining Market and Bureaucratic Control in Education: An Answer to Market and Bureaucratic Failure?
Vandenberghe, Vincent
Comparative Education, v35 n3 p271-82 Nov 1999
Examines market and bureaucratic control of education in terms of "institutions" typically analyzed by economists. Focuses on hybrid educational institutions combining bureaucratic and market control (called "quasi-markets") in Belgium, the Netherlands, Great Britain, and New Zealand. Finds little evidence of improved efficiency of quasi-markets and problems of increased between-school ability segregation. Contains 61 references. (SV)
