The Learning-Centered Institution: Ideas & Observations
O'Banion, Terry
Community College Journal, v73 n5 p12-15 Apr-May 2003
As community colleges begin their journey to become more learning centered, they can capitalize on some of the experiences that such institutions have accumulated in a 100-year history of constantly coping with change. This article presents 10 observations about the challenges and 10 observations about the opportunities community colleges face as they respond to and prepare for change related to becoming more learning-centered institutions. The observations offered may provide a basis for review and examination of progress thus far, or as readiness assessment tools for colleges contemplating the journey toward learning-centeredness. All community colleges should find the observations useful as a catalyst for creating campus conversations about change and about learning.
