Lucero: Shining a Light on Latino Student Retention
Cunningham, Paula D.; Cardenas, Judith; Martinez, Raul; Mason, Mary Lou
Community College Journal of Research & Practice, v30 n2 p139-140 Feb 2006
The retention rate of a growing Latino student population at Lansing Community College (LCC) in Lansing, Michigan, continues to be an institutional priority. The college has had many successful outcomes from programs designed to assist students pursing their education goals; but the challenges of Latino students in a community college setting--especially a commuter environment--present some specific challenges. Consequently, the college established a Design Group to evaluate the best and most successful retention programs. This was done to carve out, based on research, a new design for addressing the needs of Latino students at LCC. Component parts of the program that have contributed to its success are: (1) Technology; (2) Community connections; (3) Workforce development; (4) Academic success; and (5) Mentoring and support.
