With every student who graduates college to pursue a career in the green workforce, the case for green-collar job training at the nation's community colleges is made anew. As federal stimulus dollars wind down, community colleges are determined to maintain and expand green-focused education and job training successes. The American Association of Community Colleges Sustainability Education & Economic Development Center (AACC SEED) Green Genome project aims to help colleges achieve a successful green transformation. The project, which included input from industry, the U.S. Department of Energy, the Interstate Renewable Energy Council, and many community college practitioners, begins with institutional competency areas--called DNA strands--intended to help participating colleges hone and advance sustainability efforts. Each competency area contains a set of specific indicators. Together these indicators provide a framework for colleges to assess their performance and identify areas of improvement. This fall, AACC's SEED Center used its four competencies as the basis for recognizing five exemplary colleges as Green Genome winners. Each college received $8,000 in cash, as well as a state-of-the-art set of Bahco brand Snap-on agricultural tools. This article takes a brief look at their success.
