The 1988 Supreme Court decision in Hazelwood School District vs. Kuhlmeier, characterized by deference to school officials in controlling speech and publications, is examined in the context of 10 higher education cases citing the decision. It is concluded that higher education in general, faculty in particular, should be concerned about an evolving encroachment on academic freedom and freedom of speech. (MSE)
