New ways for teaching educationally disadvantaged students are described by a licensed psychologist. The trend involves more emphasis upon the establishment of affective relationships between students and teacher and between students themselves. The pedagogical system for programmed teaching consists of four components: (1) specify what is to be learned; (2) specify procedures in instruction; (3) observe acquired information; and (4) consequate student performance. Suggestions for achieving these objectives are offered. (LBH)

The effects of an innovative method of instruction on cognitive and attitudinal outcomes were examined. The method combined the techniques of large and small group instruction. Findings suggest that large group instruction, when combined with small group interaction, may provide a satisfactory alternative to traditional instruction. (LBH)

The evaluation process as it affects teacher improvement was examined at Carleton College. Assumptions were made regarding the nature and use of student evaluation of teaching and from them a series of procedures was created for securing student evaluations in written form. (LBH)

A major instructional strategy is to provide concrete and "true to life" vehicles for graduate students in various fields of education as they approach the task of learning the abstract concepts in educational statistics. An IBM 360/40 computer is used to increase individualized efforts in these courses. (LBH)

A person centered communication workshop was developed to help aspiring facilitators achieve a set of listening and responding skills with which to initiate and/or sustain facilitative interactions. The workshop has been helpful to teachers, teacher aides, counselors, speech-audiology therapists, and pupil personnel workers. (LBH)

Teaching and learning experiences for graduate students planning careers as college or university teachers are presented in a seminar offered to students in a variety of disciplines. A survey study to determine the status of "Foundations of Mathematics" and "Philosophy of Mathematics" in the total curricular preparation of prospective school mathematics teachers in the U.S. is reported. Implications for curriculum development are discussed and objectives of these two courses are appended. (LBH)

Underlying organizational reforms in medical and other professional schools that can be applied to schools of education are outlined along with specific criteria to be applied to the organizational goals. The criteria deal with student characteristics, curriculum, buildings and other facilities, staff, licensing, and self-discipline. (LBH)

The feasibility of organizing selected professional development skills and knowledge into a performance-based learning sequence was examined at Oregon State. Six general competency areas were derived for preservice and graduate vocational-industrial inservices teachers. (LBH)

Northwestern's Seminar on College Teaching, sponsored by the Graduate School, is open to any graduate student in any degree program and each participating department outlines its own seminar content and procedures. Indiana University's master of science degree program in elementary education offers continuous counseling, is field-oriented, geared toward individually prescribed instruction, and is competency based. A single course, Community Study, in the program is described. (LBH)

The effectiveness of faculty observation was examined in South Florida's Continuous Laboratory Experience Program, in which students combine course work at the college campus with two hours work each day in a school. Suggestions for using non-faculty observers are offered. (LBH)

The development of a course curriculum for generic competencies in teacher education is reported with focus on a sequence of learning laboratories or modules consisting of both a pre- and post-test and a statement of the specific content objectives for that lab.
