Science fiction films were used in required and elective nonmajor science courses as a pedagogical tool to motivate student interest in science and to reinforce critical thinking about scientific concepts. Students watched various films and critiqued them for scientific accuracy in written assignments. Students' perception of this activity was assessed by a survey administered in three courses over one year. On the basis of self-reporting by students, analysis of science fiction films enhanced their interest in, and understanding of, science and technology. The data presented here demonstrate the broad utility of science fiction films for inspiring nonscience majors to become interested in science. (Contains 5 tables.)
