How to Survive an Academic Job Interview
Herreid, Clyde Freeman; Full, Robert J.
Journal of College Science Teaching, v39 n3 p10-15 Jan 2010
Career development is an important issue, and there are aspects of finding the right position that are particular to science faculty. This article offers a checklist of questions to ask in an academic job interview. Some queries are more appropriate for the chairperson and other administrators; others are better asked of faculty or students. With this checklist in hand or tucked away in a folder, one should get most of the major information he/she needs to make an intelligent decision. One should be able to give the impression that he/she is an informed, bright candidate, rather than a naive neophyte--and he/she can always keep the conversation flowing even in the most tension-laden situation by just throwing out another question. The checklist is divided under three headings that seem reasonable: (1) General Information; (2) Teaching; and (3) Research.
