Global Nomads and the Search for Cultural Identity: Tips from the Classroom
Al-Issa, Ahmad
College Teaching, v52 n1 p31 Win 2004
Understanding one's cultural system leads to greater skills in appreciating other cultures. When students and teachers from diverse cultural backgrounds come together, they bring diversity that can either improve or break down the process of learning and teaching. If handled properly, cultural diversity can enrich the classroom; if ignored, however, cultural conflicts may arise. In this paper, I provide a personal account of my teaching practices. I present ways of investigating, analyzing, and understanding cultural conflicts that result from interactions among students and teachers in various classes. I highlight the importance of students working as "cultural investigators" to better understand the nature of conflicts in the classroom.
