Think outside the Box: A Logic-Defying "Impossible" Solution
Raje, Sonali
Journal of College Science Teaching, v41 n6 p10-11 Jul 2012
"Think outside the box" is a very common phrase, routinely used to convey the idea of finding creative and unconventional solutions to problems. Although widely used as a cliche in the business world, this phrase is significantly applicable to people who do science for a living, because scientists are constantly developing and testing new ideas. Science educators and teachers want their students and future science teachers to possess excellent analytical and reasoning skills and become independent thinkers while developing their content knowledge. Occasionally, when students fail to understand discipline-specific concepts, they become frustrated with them. Although students might not display their thinking skills as applied to science-specific content knowledge, it is critical to acknowledge that students do not come to classes as blank slates. In this article, the author presents a case of one science lesson where a small group of preservice teachers enrolled in her class demonstrated just how much students can think outside the box, even in seemingly impossible situations.
