When Honesty is the Expected Policy: Utilizing Peer Relations in Classroom Management
Rudebock, Richard D.
College Teaching, v53 n4 p145 Fall 2005
In this article, a teacher shares his experience at handling student cheating in his small business management class at a private Christian liberal arts university and recommends the steps he had taken to other teachers who encountered similar situations. Shocked by the failing scores from two students who had done well on previous quizzes, the author took a closer examination of the situation and just as he suspected, the answers listed by the students who failed were identical to those of the person seated beside them. In a way of managing the situation, he posed a philosophical question before his class about honesty and dishonesty for discussion, explained to his class about the cheating that happened, and let his students write a letter telling their classmate who cheats about what they think of their action and its consequences.
