A pilot research program to measure the academic qualities of undergraduate colleges has been announced by the Higher Education Research Institute of Los Angeles and the Council on Learning. The study will include a literature review, measures of institutional popularity among students, and reputational ratings of undergraduate departments. (JMD)

The Undergraduate Intern Program in college teaching at the New College of the University of Alabama allows upperclass students in any school or college at the University to spend one or two semesters working in every aspect of the classroom with a faculty member for three hours credit each semester. The use of undergraduate liaison students in a lecture/laboratory course and in a lecture course is described. Facilitating laboratory procedures, helping students with academic material, and advocating student needs were among the activities of the liaison students who served as links between the class and instructor and/or subject matter. The use of student projects as teaching-learning activities is discussed. Numerous projects, the work of college students enrolled in American literature, journalism, and composition classes are described. The motivational value of projects is seen as an important aspect of this approach. (JMD)

Personal experience and educational research suggests that, while self-evaluation is a valuable educational tool for college students, its use should be reserved for graduate students, who have maturity and a more realistic appraisal of their academic accomplishments than do undergraduate students. A study to assess student attitudes toward the grade contract in order to determine if students do view it as a positive procedure to aid learning is presented. The study questionnaire sought student opinions on the grade decision process and results, course interest and learning outcomes, and their perceptions of the professor's role. (JMD)

Recognition of some of the variations in educational backgrounds and life-styles of foreign stduents--particularly those from developing nations--could ease the communication difficulties they face when studying in American universities. Observations of language problems, counseling problems, class behavior, and social customs are offered. (JMD)

Presented is a study to determine the relationship between personality and student responsiveness to a particular learning technique. The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator was used to indicate student personality; the seminar approach with varying degrees of structure and leadership was the basic classroom technique. (JMD)

Described is a state-wide exchange program of Black and some White students involving five Florida higher education institutions. Funded by the Carnegie Corporation, the program is an intellectual and cultural exchange, designed to encourage preprofessional and pregraduate Black students considering graduate study. (JMD)

Critical evaluation of teaching and the devices through which teachers try to increase their self-critical abilities and to improve their work are addressed. Focus is on videotaping technologies that enable teachers to act, step back and observe, and then analyze their work. (JMD)

Reported is an evaluation of the remediation program for students with sub-standard preparation at Hunter College of the City University of New York. Program results and a method for assessing results in a situation where ethics and administrative problems preclude the use of a randomized control group are presented. (JMD)

It is suggested that most of the things people learn are not taught; they are learned by induction. Learning and teaching theories are analyzed with a focus on the induction theory and its implications. The symbol processing carried out by computers is used as a point for comparison. (JMD)
