The Thermit Reaction: A Dazzling Thermochemical Demonstration.
Kauffman, George B.
Journal of College Science Teaching, v26 n4 p286-87 Feb 1997
Describes an outdoor scientific demonstration of metal reduction, a reaction known as the thermit process. Heat from an ignition mixture is required to initiate the reaction, which then becomes self-sustaining. The demonstration provides a dazzling introduction to such fundamental general chemistry topics as oxidation-reduction, metallurgy, spontaneity of reaction, thermochemistry, and the application of chemical reactions to industrial processes.
