Mentoring New Adjunct Faculty to Teach Science Laboratories
Anderson, Delia Castro
Journal on Excellence in College Teaching, v18 n2 p61-78 2007
The author discusses mentoring and training strategies that enhance adjunct faculty members' teaching effectiveness in undergraduate science laboratories and foster a sense of common enterprise within the institutional environment. These strategies include the preparation of an "Adjunct Faculty Handbook", mentoring and peer-support programs, and orientation/training workshops. Interviews and survey findings indicate that when adjunct faculty are mentored and/or trained, laboratories run more efficiently, collegiality among part-time and full-time faculty improves, adjunct faculty retention rates are enhanced, and individuals become more self-assured and self-directed in their roles as members of the learning community.
